Top Maternity Photo Location Ideas

There is something about Michigan light in the golden hour that stops me in my tracks every single time. The way it filters through the tree canopy at Stony Creek, or catches the water at Belle Isle, or turns a simple meadow at Addison Oaks into something that looks like it belongs in a magazine — this is why I photograph maternity sessions outdoors.

I have been shooting outdoor maternity sessions across Metro Detroit for years, and I have learned things about these parks that you genuinely cannot find anywhere else. Not just which parks are beautiful — every photographer lists the same parks — but when to be there, where to stand, what the light actually does at different times of day, and how off-camera lighting transforms these locations from nice to extraordinary.

This is that guide. The real one.

Whether you are due in spring, summer, fall, or winter — this post will help you figure out exactly where to go, when to go, and what to expect when you get there. And if you are on the fence between outdoor and studio, I have a section at the bottom that will help you figure out which experience is right for you.

Quick tip before you dive in: If you are planning to use any of the Huron-Clinton Metroparks (Stony Creek, Kensington, Independence Oaks, Addison Oaks), grab an Annual Metroparks Pass — it covers entry to all of them for the year. Oakland County Parks also has an annual pass that covers Rochester Municipal Park. Both are worth every penny if you are doing a session at any of these locations.

How to Use This Guide

Each location below includes my honest insider notes — the things I tell my own clients before we show up. Best arrival times. Lighting windows. What changes by season. Where specifically to go within each park. And how off-camera lighting (one of the biggest differentiators in our sessions) changes the game at each spot.

I also added a quick-reference comparison table at the end so you can filter by what matters most to you: light, crowds, parking, seasonal beauty, and whether it works for larger groups.

Ready? Here we go.

1. Stony Creek Metropark — My Current Favorite

Location: Shelby Township / Washington Township, Macomb County

Best For: Variety, lakeside shots, open meadows, flowy gown sessions

Park Pass Required: Yes — Huron-Clinton Metroparks Annual Pass or day use fee

Permit for Photography: Not required for personal sessions

Stony Creek is where I go when I want to give a client everything — multiple backdrops, completely different looks within one session, and that combination of wide open space with intimate wooded areas that photographs beautifully.

The park covers over 4,000 acres, so the key is knowing which section to use.

The South Lake Area is my go-to for golden hour lakeside shots. The lake reflects the sky in a way that creates this natural softbox effect — it softens the light on your face even when the sun is harsh. For sessions starting at 6:30–7pm in summer, this is where I want to be. The walk from parking to the water’s edge is minimal, which matters more than people think at 30+ weeks.

The meadow areas near the beach parking lot are where I set up off-camera lighting for that magazine-editorial look. When you bring a strobe outdoors — even in full sun — it lets me properly expose the sky and the subject simultaneously. You get a rich blue sky or deep golden backdrop instead of a blown-out white one. This is a dramatic difference, and Stony Creek’s open meadows give me the space to position the light exactly where I want it.

The tree canopy trails near the nature center offer dappled light that is stunning from 5–7pm in spring and fall. The path curves in a way that creates natural leading lines drawing the eye directly to you.

Spring: Wildflowers start appearing in late April along the trail edges — beautiful for close compositions. Peak bloom is usually mid-May.

Summer: Come at 7pm or later. Midday light at Stony Creek is brutally harsh on an open meadow. Golden hour here is genuinely one of the most beautiful things I have ever photographed.

Fall: This is Stony Creek’s finest season. The maples around the south lake turn first — usually mid-October — and the combination of the gold and rust foliage against the water is something you have to see to believe. Book early; fall dates fill by August.

Winter: The lake when it is partially frozen, with snowfall on the trails — unexpected but striking. Studio-style lighting outdoors in winter is one of my favorite technical challenges.

2. Kensington Metropark — The Grand One

Location: Milford / Brighton, Livingston County / Oakland County border

Best For: Drama, Kent Lake reflections, rolling hills, couples

Park Pass Required: Yes — Huron-Clinton Metroparks Annual Pass or day use fee

Permit for Photography: Not required for personal sessions

Note: About 40 minutes from Rochester — plan accordingly

Kensington is the one that makes first-time clients gasp when they see the gallery. There is a scale to this park that just reads differently on camera. Kent Lake is enormous, and its reflections during golden hour produce images that look almost surreal.

The boardwalk and bridge areas are where I spend the most time. The wooden architecture gives you a structural framing element that adds depth to compositions — especially with a flowing gown. I always bring at least one darker gown to Kensington because the contrast against the water and sky is breathtaking.

The rolling hills along the entrance road photograph beautifully in fall when the grass goes golden. If you have older children you are including, this is the spot — wide open space, nothing to trip on, plenty of room to move.

Golden hour timing here is critical. Kensington sits at a slight western elevation, which means the sun drops behind the treeline faster than you expect. I target arriving no later than 90 minutes before sunset. In June, that means 8pm arrival. In September, closer to 6:30pm.

Off-camera lighting at Kensington: The lakeshore is where the magic happens. I can position a strobe behind and to the side of you with the lake stretching out in front, and the result is a separation from the background that standard available-light photography simply cannot produce. The image looks cinematic.

Best season: Fall. No question. The drive through the park in October is a destination in itself.

Parking note: Kensington gets very busy on weekends in summer. Weekday sessions avoid the crowds entirely. If you have schedule flexibility, a Tuesday or Wednesday at golden hour in late September is my first recommendation for this park.

3. Independence Oaks County Park — The Hidden Gem

Location: Clarkston, Oakland County

Best For: Intimacy, quiet, wooded light, introspective portraits

Park Pass Required: No – Free, Park of Oakland County Parks

Permit for Photography: No Permit Required, but they have closing hours & are strict!

Independence Oaks is the park I recommend when a client tells me she wants something quieter, more intimate, more removed from everything. It is smaller than Stony Creek or Kensington, and that is exactly what makes it special.

The Crooked Lake shoreline in the interior of the park is where I have gotten some of my most emotional maternity images. Something about the stillness of the water and the way the tree canopy closes over the trail creates an atmosphere that feels genuinely private — even though you are in a public park.

Early morning is this park’s superpower. The light that comes through the trees at 8am in late May or early September is soft, directional, and incredibly flattering. I rarely shoot maternity sessions before 4pm, but Independence Oaks is the exception — morning here is worth the early wake-up.

The wooded trails provide natural shade that extends the window for beautiful light. Even on a fully overcast day, this park photographs beautifully. Overcast light is a photographer’s dream — it acts as a giant natural softbox and eliminates harsh shadows entirely. If your session day has cloud cover, do not worry. Independence Oaks will deliver.

Terrain note: Some of the trails include uneven ground. This is manageable at 28–32 weeks, but I always walk the planned path with clients before the session starts. Comfortable shoes to the location, then we switch into the gown and heels for portraits.

Parking: Small lot, limited spots. This is not a park where you can show up 10 minutes before session start. I recommend a 20-minute arrival buffer.

4. Addison Oaks County Park — The Meadow Dream

Location: Leonard / Addison Township, Oakland County

Best For: Open meadow sessions, lake views, florals in spring, dramatic wide shots

Park Pass Required: No – Free, Part of Oakland County Parks

Permit for Photography: No, but if you wish to shoot at the mansion you will need to schedule around events. Summertime weddings take precedence!

Addison Oaks is the park I think about when a client says she wants that wide, open, airy look — the kind of image where she is the only thing in the frame for what feels like miles. The park’s meadow areas give me the composition room to work with long lenses, which are incredibly flattering for maternity portraits.

The lake at Addison Oaks is gorgeous but not as famous as Kensington’s, which means you are far less likely to have another family walk through your frame. That matters more than people realize during a session.

Spring is Addison Oaks at its best. The wildflower growth along the meadow edges in May is exactly what you picture when you imagine a dream maternity session. I have shot here in peak bloom and the images look almost painted.

Off-camera lighting in the meadow: This is one of my favorite spots to use rim lighting — placing the strobe behind the subject to create a halo of light that separates her from the background. Combined with the wide meadow and a flowing champagne or ivory gown, the result is editorial and romantic at the same time.

Summer: Come late. The meadow has almost no shade, so midday sessions here are uncomfortable. 7pm arrival in June or July puts you in golden hour territory.

Fall: The tree line around the meadow turns beautifully. The combination of open meadow foreground and fall foliage background is a composition I use every single October.

5. Rochester Municipal Park — The Accessible Classic

Location: Rochester, Oakland County

Best For: Clients closer to Oakland County, quick sessions, accessible terrain

Park Pass Required: No

Permit for Photography: Not required

Parking note: Free but limited — arrive early on weekends

Rochester Municipal Park is the most accessible option on this list in every sense of the word. No entry fee, close proximity to Rochester (where our studio is located), flat and easy terrain, and genuinely beautiful when the light is right.

The park sits along the Paint Creek, and the waterway shots are lovely during golden hour. The covered bridge area gives a structural framing element. The tree-lined paths offer shade for sessions that need to start earlier in the day.

The honest assessment: Rochester Municipal Park is not as dramatic or expansive as Stony Creek or Kensington. But for clients who want a beautiful session without the drive, or who are later in their pregnancy and need minimal walking, it delivers consistently gorgeous results.

Spring is this park’s strongest season. The tree canopy fills in through May and creates beautiful dappled light along the creek walk. By summer, the park gets crowded on weekends — earlier in the morning or weekday sessions are the answer.

Lighting note: Because the park is smaller, I rely more heavily on off-camera lighting here than at the larger parks. A single strobe positioned to replicate directional window light transforms this park from pleasant to intentional. The images look deliberately lit in a beautiful way.

6. Belle Isle Park — The One-of-a-Kind

Location: Detroit (via MacArthur Bridge from East Jefferson)

Best For: Detroit skyline, unique urban-meets-natural, destination-feel sessions

Park Pass Required: Michigan State Park annual pass or daily vehicle fee

Permit for Photography: Commercial photography permit required — I handle this for all sessions

Drive time from Rochester: Approximately 45 minutes

Belle Isle is in a category of its own, and I mean that completely. This is the only location in Metro Detroit where you can photograph against the Detroit skyline reflected in the Detroit River, with Canada visible across the water. That backdrop exists nowhere else.

The park is technically an island in the Detroit River, and the combination of urban architecture, water, and the occasional cargo ship moving through the river creates images that look like nothing else in a Michigan maternity gallery.

The Scott Fountain area is the most iconic — the fountain itself is staggering in scale and provides dramatic symmetrical compositions. The images here have a timelessness to them that I love.

The north shoreline gives you the best Detroit skyline views. At golden hour, the city lights just beginning to flicker on behind a client in a dark green or burgundy gown — that is a frame I have on my own wall.

Important logistics: Belle Isle requires a Michigan DNR photography permit for commercial sessions. I manage the permit process for every Belle Isle session — you do not need to do anything. Just know that scheduling is slightly longer-lead than the other parks.

The drive: About 45 minutes from Rochester. I always build a 20-minute buffer into Belle Isle sessions for the bridge crossing, which can back up.

When it is worth it: If you want images that look unlike any maternity photo you have ever seen in Metro Detroit, Belle Isle is worth the drive. If you want classic, natural, wooded Michigan beauty, Stony Creek will serve you better.

Bonus Locations Worth Knowing

A few additional parks come up frequently enough that they deserve a mention, even though they are not always my first recommendation:

Lake St. Clair Metropark (Harrison Township): Beautiful beach and lakeshore access. Best in spring before crowds arrive. Stunning for clients who want that coastal-feeling session without leaving Michigan.

Cranberry Lake Park (North of Rochester): An 1800s farmhouse, barns, and a maple tree lane. One of the most unique architectural backdrops in the area. Permit required through the city. Particularly beautiful in fall.

Troy Farm Park: Rolling farmland with a barn. Excellent for spring sessions when the grasses are long. More intimate scale than the metroparks.

Westview Orchards (Washington Township): Sunflower season in late July and early August is a specialty session all its own. The scale of those sunflowers is something that has to be experienced in person.

Outdoor vs. Studio: Which Is Right for You?

This is the question I get most often, and my honest answer is: it depends on what you want to feel like in your images.

Outdoor sessions are for you if:

  • Healthy Pregnancy and able to walk/be on your feet for 1 hour or more
  • You want movement, flow, and a connection to natural Michigan beauty
  • You love the idea of your images looking like a moment in time rather than a formal portrait
  • You are drawn to images with a natural backdrop of trees, water, or open fields
  • You have flexibility on timing (outdoor sessions are weather and light-dependent)

Our studio is for you if:

  • High Risk or Late Term Photoshoot
  • You want full control — no wind, no weather uncertainty, no parking logistics
  • You are drawn to fine art, dramatic gown, or fashion-forward imagery
  • You prefer a more intimate, focused environment
  • You want the hair and makeup station, wardrobe, and photography all in one place without leaving

The good news: You do not have to choose. Many of our clients do both — an hour in the studio and an hour at a nearby outdoor location. We bring the full wardrobe, off-camera lighting kit, and hair and makeup touch-up capability to outdoor sessions, so the quality of the experience does not change when we leave the studio.

If you are not sure which direction is right for you, that is exactly what our consultation call is for.

When Should You Book and Shoot?

This question comes up almost as often as location questions, so it belongs in this guide.

Book your session when you are between 20 and 28 weeks. This gives you the most date flexibility and ensures we can plan around your due month.

Shoot your session between 28 and 34 weeks. This is the sweet spot — your bump is beautifully full and prominent, and you are still comfortable enough to move freely, change outfits, and enjoy the experience. By 34 weeks, mobility becomes genuinely limiting outdoors.

The timing calculator on our site can help you figure out your ideal shoot window based on your due date.

What Makes Our Outdoor Sessions Different

I want to be direct about this because it matters for what you see in your gallery.

Most outdoor maternity photography in Metro Detroit is available-light photography — the photographer works with whatever the sun is doing that day. That is fine photography. But it is not what we do.

Every outdoor session includes off-camera lighting. That means I bring a studio-quality strobe to the park. It means I can shoot with the sun behind you for a natural rim light while my strobe properly exposes your face. It means we can shoot longer into the evening without losing quality. It means the sky in your images is rich and saturated, not white and blown out.

It also means your gown works the way it should. Sheer fabrics look like sheer fabrics — not transparent blobs of overexposed white. The light wraps around the texture of a lace sleeve. The details hold.

This is the difference between a beautiful snapshot of you at a pretty park and a photograph that looks like it was made for a magazine.

Ready to Plan Your Session?

If you are due this spring or summer, now is the time to get on the calendar. Our spring and early summer dates fill within weeks of opening — this is not marketing language, it is just the reality of how many families we work with each year.

The consultation call is where we figure out your location, timing, gown direction, and what the overall vision for your session looks like. It takes about 20 minutes and it is the most important 20 minutes of your session planning process.

Questions first? Inquire today, we respond within 24 hours.
