Angela showed up to her senior session a little nervous. Most seniors do. There is something about knowing the camera is about to be on you that makes everyone go quiet for a second.
So we did not start with the camera. We started in a field of daffodils, with the light going soft and gold. By the time the sky turned that deep evening blue, she had forgotten I was working at all. She was just standing in a sea of yellow, laughing at something, completely herself.
That is the whole idea behind the way we photograph seniors at Two Wild Souls. We take the pressure off first. What is left is the real person.
We moved under the cherry blossoms while the light was still pink. I asked her to walk, and I followed. She went barefoot in the grass with a hundred blooming branches arching over her head.
Somewhere in there she stopped checking whether she was doing it right. She just walked. And the photos got better the second she did.
Down by the water the wind picked up and caught her dress. She turned and looked back over her shoulder, and there was this expression on her face like she finally believed it. That she looked beautiful. That this evening, and these photos, belonged to her.
I love the quiet frames like this one. No big smile. No performance. Just a senior who knows exactly who she is.
Then she changed out of the dress and into her kendo uniform.
Angela trains in kendo, and has for years. So she pulled on the full uniform, took her stance, and raised the shinai over her head. The soft spring girl from the daffodil field was still there, but now you could see what was underneath her. The discipline. The hours of practice. The version of her that a quick yearbook headshot would never come close to catching.
This is why I ask every senior the same question before we plan a single thing. Who are you when no one is making you pose? Then we build the session around the answer.
A senior session in a pretty dress is lovely. It is just not the whole story.
We ended where we started, back in the daffodils, as the last of the color drained out of the sky. She sat down in the middle of all of it, rested her head on her arms, and went completely still.
That frame is my favorite of the whole evening. She is not smiling for anyone. She is just a girl sitting at the edge of everything that comes next, and for one quiet second I got to keep it.
Half of a great senior session is the light. The other half is the place. Angela’s evening moved through some of the prettiest spring scenery the area has, from open fields of daffodils to blossom-lined paths along the water.
When seniors ask me where to take their senior pictures, this is what they are really after. A setting that feels like more than a backdrop. We scout and plan every location before your session, so you are never standing around wondering where to go next.
Each season opens up something different around here. Spring brings the flower fields and the cherry blossoms. Summer opens up the lakes and the golden fields. Fall turns the whole region warm and gold. Whatever season your senior year lands in, there is a version of Metro Detroit that was made for your senior photos.
A session with us is all-inclusive, which means the hard parts are handled long before you arrive. Professional hair and makeup, so you feel camera-ready and confident. A wardrobe of designer gowns to pull from, right alongside the outfits that are personal to you, the way Angela brought her kendo uniform.
We plan your looks, your locations, and the parts of your story worth photographing, together, before the day arrives. Then you show up, and we handle the rest.
If you want senior pictures that look like the real you, instead of a stiff pose in front of a screen, let’s plan your senior session. Sessions are limited each season, and the best light goes fast.
