There are dozens of photographers who will tell you Cranbrook is beautiful. We’ll tell you to arrive before 7:30am on a weekday in October if you want the back garden to yourself — and to skip the south entrance entirely because parking is a nightmare on weekends.
That’s the difference between reading about a location and actually shooting there hundreds of times.
We’re Two Wild Souls Photography, a premier Metro Detroit Maternity Photographer, with over 65 five-star Google reviews and hundreds of documented maternity sessions across Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties. This guide covers every location we genuinely recommend — not just the Instagram-famous ones — along with what actually works, what doesn’t, and what time of year to book each one.
Every Two Wild Souls session includes professional hair & makeup, a curated wardrobe, and expert posing direction — so you can focus entirely on the moment.
After photographing hundreds of Michigan mamas, here’s what we’ve learned: the sweet spot is 28–32 weeks. Your bump is beautifully pronounced, you’re still comfortable enough to move naturally, and you have enough time to plan without rushing. We do not photograph after 34 weeks — that’s a firm boundary we hold for everyone’s comfort.
But in Michigan, timing isn’t just about your pregnancy — it’s about the season. Here’s what each one actually looks like on location:
Spring (April – early June): Wildflowers and soft green at Kensington Metropark. Cherry blossoms at Belle Isle usually peak mid-to-late April. Mud is real — closed-toe shoes and a pair of flats to change into are essential. Book by late February for spring dates; they go fast.
Summer (July – mid-September): Sunflower fields open at Michigan Flower Farm (roughly mid-July through August). Golden hour light at Stony Creek is exceptional. Heat and bugs are factors — we typically schedule summer sessions starting at 7am or within the last 90 minutes before sunset. Book 6–8 weeks out.
Fall (October – early November): Peak color at most Metro Detroit parks happens in the second and third week of October. This is our most requested season by far — book by early September to guarantee a spot. Addison Oaks and Independence Oaks are at their absolute best this time of year.
Winter (December – March): Frozen lake and snow sessions are magical and genuinely rare — most photographers won’t do them. We love them. Late January through early March is the window, though the exact dates depend on the year’s weather. Studio sessions in our Rochester space are a great alternative for mamas due in winter who want to avoid the cold.
We’ve photographed maternity sessions at nearly every major park, estate, and hidden gem in Metro Detroit. Here’s our honest take on each one — including the things other photographers won’t tell you

Sometimes the most meaningful session is the one that happens in your own space. Reading in the nursery, lying on your bed with afternoon light coming through the curtains, sitting barefoot on your back porch — these sessions are intimate, unhurried, and often produce the images clients treasure most.
We love in-home sessions for: winter mamas who want to avoid the cold, clients with complex mobility needs, or anyone who simply wants something that feels personal over polished.
Our private studio in downtown Rochester is our home base, and we design every inch of it to photograph beautifully. Studio sessions are a great option when Michigan weather won’t cooperate, when you want a more controlled editorial look, or when you’re envisioning something more intimate — including maternity boudoir.
For clients envisioning maternity boudoir — including partially unclothed or artistic nude sessions — our studio provides complete privacy and creative freedom. These sessions have become one of our most requested services, and we approach them with the same warmth and professionalism as every other session we do.
Studio sessions also pair beautifully with our hair and makeup service — you arrive, get pampered, and walk 10 feet to the shooting space. No parking, no weather, no logistics.
Here’s the honest answer: don’t stress it. Our sessions include wardrobe guidance and access to our curated gown collection — we’ve specifically chosen pieces that photograph beautifully in Michigan light across all four seasons.
That said, here’s what we’ve learned after photographing Michigan mamas year-round:
In fall (40–65°F): Layers are your best friend. We’ll often start with a wrap or light jacket for the first few shots and remove it as you warm up. Velvet, satin, and heavier chiffon photograph especially well against fall foliage. Rust, burgundy, champagne, and forest green work beautifully in October light.
In summer (65–85°F): Lighter fabrics — airy chiffon, silk charmeuse, jersey knit — are more comfortable and move beautifully in a breeze. Soft neutrals, dusty blush, and sage green photograph well against summer greens.
In winter: Faux fur wraps, oversized knit sweaters, and heavy gowns create stunning contrast against snow. We keep sessions shorter and move quickly — you won’t be cold for long.
In spring: Florals work here in a way they don’t in other seasons. Flowing pastel gowns against cherry blossoms or wildflowers is a combination we never get tired of shooting.
General rules that apply year-round: soft fabrics over structured, solid tones over busy patterns, and always bring options. We’ll help you mix it up.
A note on maternity-specific clothing: many off-the-rack maternity gowns don’t photograph as well as they look on a hanger — the fabric quality and cut often read flat in photos. Our curated collection was sourced specifically for how it photographs, not just how it looks in a store. Most clients end up preferring our gowns over what they brought.
There’s a reason ‘hands on bump’ is the most generic maternity pose ever — it’s the only thing most photographers say. We approach posing completely differently: instead of telling you where to put your hands, we give you something to feel or do, and then photograph what happens.
Here are some of the actual prompts we use in every session:
Every session includes expert direction throughout — we never just point a camera and wait. Our job is to create the conditions for genuine emotion and then be ready when it happens.
We design our sessions to be genuinely luxurious — not in the way that means uncomfortable, but in the way that means you’re taken care of from start to finish.
We also offer Belly to Baby packages that include both your maternity session and your newborn session — with priority booking and custom heirloom collections designed to work as a matched set.
The ideal window is 28–32 weeks — your bump is pronounced but you’re still comfortable and mobile. For seasonal timing in Michigan, fall sessions (September–October) book fastest, so plan 6–8 weeks ahead. For specific Michigan flower and color timing, see our seasonal breakdown above.
Luxury maternity session pricing in Metro Detroit typically ranges from $500 to $1,500+ depending on the photographer and what’s included. At Two Wild Souls, our sessions include professional hair and makeup, wardrobe access, and a private ordering appointment — making the experience significantly more full-service than most photographers in the area. Contact us for current pricing and what’s included.
Yes — Cranbrook requires a permit for professional photography sessions. Belle Isle requires a Michigan Recreation Passport for vehicle entry. Most Oakland County Parks (Kensington, Addison Oaks, Independence Oaks) require an Oakland County Parks pass or day fee. We handle permit coordination for every session we shoot — you don’t need to navigate this on your own.
Fall is the most popular — peak color at most Metro Detroit parks falls in the second and third week of October. Summer offers wildflowers and long golden-hour light. Spring has cherry blossoms and soft greens. Winter snow sessions are rare but stunning. Each season has specific advantages depending on your aesthetic — see our full seasonal breakdown above.
Absolutely. We love sessions that include partners, toddlers, and older kids — and we’re experienced at keeping everyone comfortable and connected throughout. We’ll build the session timeline around nap schedules, snack breaks, and short attention spans if needed.
Yes — professional hair and makeup is included in every Two Wild Souls maternity session. We work with experienced stylists who specialize in making clients look natural, glowing, and completely themselves. You arrive as yourself and leave feeling like a version of yourself you don’t often get to see.
Yes. Our Belly to Baby collections include both sessions with priority newborn booking and custom heirloom products designed to work as a matched set. Booking both together is the best way to ensure continuity in your images and secure a newborn slot (which often books 6–8 weeks before your due date).
