A downtown Detroit senior session at the DIA, and Parker’s Alley, with hair and makeup, multiple outfits, and an unhurried day across the city.

Senior Photos at the DIA & Parker’s Alley | Downtown Detroit

Photography

Markel’s session started the way all of mine do, in the makeup chair with a coffee and nowhere we needed to be. Her hair and makeup were handled for her, so the only real decision in front of her was which outfit to wear first. We had the whole afternoon and three corners of Detroit ahead of us, and not one minute of it was on a clock.

Senior portraits on the marble at the Detroit Institute of Arts

We began at the Detroit Institute of Arts, where the white marble out front is the kind of backdrop that does half the work for you. The clean lines and soft gray veining gave Markel a calm, architectural setting for her first look. She wore high-waisted trousers, a fitted top, and a pair of magenta heels that did exactly what one good shot of color should do.

There is a quiet confidence that comes out of a girl in clothes she feels good in, standing somewhere grand. We worked through the staircases, the columns, and the long stone railings, and she settled into it more with every frame.

This look is one of my favorites for a senior who is about to step into whatever comes next. It feels grown, a little editorial, and entirely like her.

An olive dress and downtown Detroit at Parker’s Alley

From there we walked over to Parker’s Alley, the downtown alley the whole city knows for its murals, string lights, and greenery strung overhead. It looks styled even when you do nothing to it. Markel changed into an olive green dress, and the warm brick did the rest.

We tucked into a corner where ivy climbs the brick for a few softer, closer frames, and she carried a simple bouquet of baby’s breath and fern that pulled the green out of the dress.

That last frame is a good example of why the hair and makeup matters. It holds up close, in real light, in an honest portrait.

Golden hour senior pictures on Belle Isle

We saved Belle Isle for last, and that was on purpose. By the time we reached the water the sky had started to turn, with the Detroit skyline sitting right across the river behind her. Markel changed into a soft white dress, slipped off her shoes in the sand, and we worked through the last of the light.

The color moved fast, from gold to pink to that deep blue you only get for a few minutes after the sun drops. Those minutes tend to give me my favorite frames of the whole day.

Three outfits, three parts of the city, and one evening that closed with her watching the sun go down over Detroit. That is the senior experience I want every girl to walk away with.

What a senior session looks like with Two Wild Souls

If you have started looking into senior photos around Metro Detroit, you already know how much one experience can differ from the next. Here is how ours runs.

Your hair and makeup are done for you the day of, by a professional, so you show up and get to relax into it rather than worry about it. You are never held to one outfit or one location. Markel wore three completely different looks, and we photographed all three at landmarks across the city without once watching the clock. And you are guided the entire time. I will tell you where to put your hands, how to stand, and where to look, so you never have to know how to model in front of a camera. That part is mine to carry.

It is the difference between hoping for a handful of nice pictures and walking away with a full gallery that genuinely looks like you.
