Book in November/December to ensure your session date is secured.
Photographing in February is typically the most reliable. This depends where you are. If you are in Grand Rapids or Northern Michigan the window may be larger such as Mid January to Mid March.
Maternity photography is a timeless way to celebrate the beauty of pregnancy, and winter offers a unique and magical setting for capturing these special moments. While the cold may seem like a challenge, with the right planning, a winter maternity photoshoot can result in some of the most breathtaking and luxurious images. We recently had the pleasure of photographing a winter maternity session that blended the beauty of the outdoors with the elegance of an indoor studio setup. The result? A collection of ultra-luxe photos perfect for any expecting mother looking to document this incredible journey.
There’s something undeniably magical about an outdoor winter maternity photoshoot, especially when the world is covered in a fresh blanket of snow. For our winter maternity session, we waited for the perfect day—one with bright sunshine, crisp air, and just the right amount of winter chill to make the snow glisten. The goal was to create an ethereal, dreamlike setting that would highlight the natural beauty of our expecting mother while making her the focal point of each image.
To take full advantage of the winter landscape, we selected two breathtaking locations: a serene, snow-covered forest and a frozen lake.
One of the biggest concerns for outdoor winter maternity photoshoots is keeping the expecting mother warm while still achieving a glamorous look. For this shoot, we selected luxurious, flowing gowns in deep jewel tones and soft neutrals that stood out beautifully against the snowy backdrop. Layering was key—discreet thermal wear underneath the dresses helped keep our model warm without compromising style.
A faux fur shawl and hand warmers were also essential for keeping comfortable between shots. The end result? Stunning photos that looked effortlessly elegant while ensuring the mother-to-be remained comfortable throughout the session.
Winter days are short, so we scheduled the shoot in the late morning to capture the best natural light. The low winter sun provided a soft, golden glow that illuminated the subject beautifully, avoiding harsh shadows while enhancing the overall warmth of the images. The sunlight reflecting off the snow also created a dreamy, ethereal effect, making each photo feel like a work of art.
After braving the cold for some stunning outdoor shots, we transitioned to an indoor setting that provided a warm and comfortable environment while still maintaining a luxurious aesthetic.
For our indoor winter maternity photoshoot, we used high-quality paper backdrops to create a refined, editorial-style look. The controlled studio lighting allowed us to highlight the expecting mother’s natural glow while offering a variety of elegant compositions. The neutral and pastel-colored backdrops created a soft, romantic atmosphere, perfectly complementing the winter theme.
The studio was heated and cozy, ensuring a relaxed and enjoyable experience. This setting allowed for more intricate posing and styling, making it ideal for capturing intimate winter maternity photography poses.
Unlike the outdoor session, which embraced dramatic gowns and rich colors, the indoor portion focused on soft, feminine aesthetics. Delicate lace gowns, form-fitting dresses, and even draped fabric created an editorial yet timeless feel. We also incorporated subtle props such as sheer veils, floral arrangements, and elegant chairs to add dimension and variety to the shoot.
While outdoor winter maternity photoshoots create breathtaking images, indoor winter maternity sessions offer a level of comfort and versatility that allows for a more intimate experience. The ability to control lighting, temperature, and backdrops ensures that every detail is perfect, making it an excellent complement to an outdoor shoot.
A winter maternity photoshoot that combines both outdoor and indoor photography results in a well-rounded, diverse collection of images. The outdoor shots provide a magical, seasonal touch, while the indoor session offers warmth, elegance, and intimacy. Together, they create a perfect balance that showcases the beauty of pregnancy in a truly luxurious way.
