What is the difference between a CNM, a CPM, and a licensed midwife?
  • CNM (certified nurse-midwife) is a registered nurse with graduate training, and most deliver in hospitals and some birth centers.
  • CPM (certified professional midwife) is trained and certified in out-of-hospital birth, at home or in a birth center.
  • LM (licensed midwife) is Michigan’s state license for midwives who are not nurse-midwives, and most hold the CPM credential.
  • You can look up any Michigan midwife on the state’s LARA license lookup before you book.

Choosing a midwife

Eight questions to ask when you interview a midwife

A few minutes of questions now saves a lot of guessing later. Use the notes boxes during your visit or call, or print the list and bring it with you.

Notes stay on this device. They are never sent to us.

  1. What are your credentials, and are you licensed in Michigan? (You can check any midwife on the state's LARA license lookup.)
  2. Where do you attend births: hospital, birth center, home, or a mix?
  3. Which hospital do you work with, and do you stay with me if I need to transfer?
  4. Who covers for you if you are unavailable or attending another birth when I go into labor?
  5. How often are prenatal visits, how long do they last, and who will I see?
  6. How do you approach pain relief, induction, and other interventions, and when would you recommend one?
  7. What does postpartum care include, and how soon after the birth will you check on us?
  8. What does your care cost in total, and what does insurance cover?

Planning a home birth

Eight questions to ask when you plan a home birth

A few minutes of questions now saves a lot of guessing later. Use the notes boxes during your visit or call, or print the list and bring it with you.

Notes stay on this device. They are never sent to us.

  1. Am I a good candidate for a home birth, and what would change that?
  2. Which hospital would we transfer to, how long is the drive, and how would we get there?
  3. What equipment and medications do you bring, including oxygen, newborn resuscitation gear, and medication for heavy bleeding?
  4. Who attends the birth, and are they trained in newborn resuscitation and CPR?
  5. Which situations would lead you to recommend a transfer, before or during labor?
  6. What do we need to prepare at home, such as supplies, space, a birth pool, and cleanup?
  7. What happens right after the birth: the newborn exam, feeding help, and your follow-up visits?
  8. How many home births have you attended, what is your transfer rate, and what does care cost?
