What do NICU levels mean?
- Level I is basic newborn care for healthy, full-term babies.
- Level II is special care for babies born a little early (about 32 weeks or later) or who need short-term help.
- Level III is a neonatal intensive care unit for babies born earlier than 32 weeks or who are critically ill.
- Level IV is the highest level, with surgical repair of complex conditions, usually at a regional referral center.
- If your pregnancy is higher risk, ask your OB-GYN which level they recommend before you choose a hospital.
Before you decide
Eight questions to ask on your hospital tour
A few minutes of questions now saves a lot of guessing later. Use the notes boxes during your visit or call, or print the list and bring it with you.
Notes stay on this device. They are never sent to us.
- Can my partner or support person stay overnight after the birth?
- Is there a NICU on site, and what level is it?
- Are tubs, water birth, or nitrous oxide available, and how often are they used?
- How many support people can be in the room during labor?
- Does my baby stay in the room with me, and when is the nursery used?
- When will I see a lactation consultant, and is help available on weekends?
- What is the visitor policy for siblings and grandparents?
- Can an outside photographer visit during our stay?

How we build this guide
We rank hospitals that deliver babies across Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Livingston, and Washtenaw counties by published national maternity recognition and quality data, and every detail is confirmed against the hospital's own information. Details change, so please confirm anything important directly with the provider. This guide is for planning and is not medical advice.
